Lough Key Triathlon Club hosted their 5th triathlon in the venue of Lough Key Forest Park and despite the wet weather stayed it turned out to be a great day for all involved. This year’s event had over 230 competitors from all over the country taking part. 2011 also marks the race’s first year in the National Series.
This year’s competition attracted elite athletes and it was Kevin Keane’s day as he was first man home in a time of 1:06: 24. Kevin was closely followed by David Richardson (1:07:19) and Darren Hughes (1:08:16).
In the women’s race it was ultimately Marie Boland from Trinity Tri Club’s day finishing with an impressive time of 1:17:31. It was a sprint finish for 2nd and 3rd place between Julie Anne Bowden and Margaret Kelly with Julie Anne crossing the line just ahead of Margaret in 1:19:38.
Junior triathlete John McDonagh did himself proud with a finish time of 1:38:47. The prize for first local male and female sponsored by Zipitt Lough Key went to Tommy Sheridan of Sligo Tri Club and our own Helen McHenry from Lough Key Tri Club.
This event owes its success to the hard work and dedication of the race organisers, supporters and particularly the main sponsors, Waterways Ireland. Sponsorship has always been a key contributor to sporting events on this event is no exception, so again our gratitude goes out to all our sponsors and supporters, particularly Lough Key Forest and Activity Park and their lovely staff, Marrey Cycles who sponsored the spot prizes & Cycle Superstores. Roscommon Sports partnership also supported the event this year with a view to developing the sport for young people.
The committee would like to thank all the volunteers and race marshals who gave up their time to help out on the morning, without the generosity and time given by these people, events like this just wouldn’t be possible. Thanks also to Roscommon County Council, the Civil Defence and the Gardai for their continued support.
